"I really wish that the vendor would leave the software alone as every change they force upon us means I’m left managing costs and risks that I could do without. Thankfully on this occasion, this system is for use by internal staff only so there’s no real risk of any financial impact. There's no escaping the fact that this is a big technology change and the operational impact of this upgrade going wrong is really unpalatable. Perhaps worse, can you imagine if the press got hold of any inclination that we’d failed to upgrade our own internal systems successfully – they’d have a field day. What I need is a proven implementation plan that gives me a warm feeling that we can do this - and absolute certainty that in the worst case scenario we can back the change out within 4 hours."
Confidence - in the Implementation Team because they have a robust plan that has been rehearsed, with tools that give them a structured and controlled plan (like the Real Time Update Panel with forward forecasting engine) and a guarantee that you will have a system in place on Monday morning
Involvement - you are directly engaged in any decision-making and you are notified of any deviation from plan, with communications at home, by email or by text over the weekend
Peace of mind - the mitigation of risk means you can relax, knowing that the organisation's reputation is safe from public criticism at the hands of the press!
"We’ve got from Saturday night until Monday morning to implement this change – which is plenty of time really but it gets a bit tight if we have to invoke a backout late in the schedule. We’ve also got the benefit of a test environment where the team can rehearse the detailed implementation plan to make sure that all tasks, dependencies and timings are spot on. We’ll build the implementation “schedule of events” in ICEflo, rehearsing the implementation as many times as I need to until, with numerous enhancements, until I have a plan that is watertight. We can even build, refine and verify the backout plan in much the same way - which is a source of great confidence. On the big day, we’ll be able to demonstrate to all the stakeholders just how proficient we are at this job, with excellent communications and a plan that runs to schedule. The boss should be relieved and the department should get some positive PR for a job well planned and well executed. I might even get that promotion that I’ve been after for years."
Confidence - in your planning because of the structured lifecycle process, rapid and parallel build of high levels of technical detail on your SoE, and you can test, refine and improve both implemention and backout plans in the test environment. Your plan is "watertight".
Control - over each stage with continuous forward forecasting with the Real Time Update Panel everyone can see when an issue arises and it is clearly communicated so it can be resolved quickly or the flag will tell you your only option is to revert to the backout plan
Ease of construction - rapid and parallel build of high levels of technical detail in your SoE and maximum re-use or cloning using historic data so that when you need to re-run this upgrade next month you have a template to build on
